Introduction to hiking

‘Ello there! Chris here, your self-proclaimed “not-an-expert” expert, ready to hurl (not literally, I promise) a handful of hiking wisdom your way to get you from Sofa To Summit. If you’ve been dreaming of swathing yourself in nature, but the thought of those intimidating peaks makes your knees knock – fear not! Today, we venture together into the wild yet wonderfully welcoming worlds of Snowdonia, The Lake District, and Dartmoor. All you need is a pinch of courage, a dash of madness, and preferably, some decent walking boots.

Now, “Why hike?” you might ponder. Allow me to illuminate the trail. One, it’s Mother Nature’s own gym, where the air is fresher than a mint garden. Two, your mental health will thank you. Nothing tells stress to jog on quite like gazing upon a panoramic view from atop Snowdonia. Third, you’ll accumulate enough quirky stories to rival your grandma’s childhood tales. If you’re lucky, you might even spot me hiking, haplessly navigating the wild, map in one hand, snack in the other.

View From Snowdon on a surprisingly good day

Step One: Getting Kitted Out

Embarking on your first hike is akin to entering a swanky soirée – you must be appropriately dressed. But rather than bow ties and sequins, with Hiking think boots, waterproofs, and a rucksack packed with essentials – water, food, a basic first-aid kit, and a map that you swear you can read.

Step Two: Choosing Your Battlefield

Or in this case, a beginner-friendly trail in the enchanting lands of Snowdonia, The Lake District, or Dartmoor. For those newly initiated, Snowdon’s Llanberis Path is friendlier than a golden retriever. In The Lake District, Cat Bells is less of a cat and more of a purring kitten, and for Dartmoor, the Haytor Rocks walk is easier than deciding to eat that last slice of pizza.

Step Three: Safety First, Wanderlust Second

Yes, the views are Instagram-gold and the air is as crisp as freshly fried bacon, but remember – nature is as unpredictable as my sense of direction. Check the weather, inform someone of your where you are hiking, and for Pete’s sake, learn how to read a map (properly).

Snowdonia’s Hidden Gems (for Novices)

Snowdonia – a land where dragons once roamed (probably) and where legends are as abundant as my misadventures. It’s not just about conquering Snowdon, it’s about the mystical lakes, the valleys that look painted by the old masters, and paths that even your Nan would venture on. Try the Mawddach Trail for a scenic, flat path ideal for novices and those allergic to inclines.

The Lake District – A Beginner’s Paradise

The Lake District isn’t all terrifying inclines and paths that make your insurance policy quiver. Oh no, places like the lovely Derwentwater Walk are as welcoming as a warm hug and a hot cuppa on a frosty morning.

Dartmoor – Where the Wild (and Novices) Roam

Dartmoor’s rugged beauty is as enticing as a mystery novel, and luckily, there are trails for the less intrepid among us. The Fingle Bridge to Castle Drogo walk is proof that Dartmoor isn’t just for the Bear Grylls of the world.

Last Bit of Natter

There’s a surreal joy in conquering trails, marking your victory not with a flag, but with an insurmountable sense of achievement and perhaps, sore legs. It’s the song of the wind as it rustles through the trees, the silent majesty of the mountains, and that delightful sense of insignificance amidst nature’s grandeur.

Remember, every mountaineer started as a clueless wanderer. Every trail etched in their memory began as an uncharted territory. If your boots are made for walking, then, my friend, that’s just what they should do.

So there you have it, an unseasoned guide to starting your hiking adventures. Do tread lightly, sing loudly and don’t forget – it’s not about the destination, it’s about how many snack breaks you can justify before you get there.

When you get confident in your hiking, I highly recommend Cadair Idris.

To the trails, and beyond!
